Name: BATS: Program and Bat House Building Workshop
Date: July 28, 2018
Time: 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM EDT
Event Description:

Free program at 12:00 noon - 1pm
Pree-registration for bat house building workshop sessions @ 10 AM and 1:30 PM

Every night while you sleep our insect population is being kept under control by winged mammals. Highly misunderstood, bats provide a great service to the ecosystem. Unfortunately, populations are on decline due to a nose fungus that interrupts their winter hibernation. Come on up to Brasstown Bald and learn about bat conservation in Georgia and build your own bat house!

(Open to all site guests. You do not have to build a bat house to participate in this free program!)

TIME: 12:00 noon - 1:00 pm
LOCATION: Mountain Top Theater

Presented by Trina Morris, Bat Biologist for Georgia Department of Natural Resources, on the research and conservation efforts being conducted on bats in Georgia. You will also have the chance to meet a Georgia bat, live and up close!

Morning Session, 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Afternoon Session, 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm

LOCATION: Parking lot level, grassy area in front of General Store and Restrooms

COST: $25 per bat house (up to 4 people per bat house), includes guided instruction by Houses for Bats and bat house kit

Bats are picky about the size of their houses which is why we are partnering with Habitat for Bats, a local Georgia bat conservation organization, to help you build the most inviting bat house possible. Habitat for Bats will provide each person/ group that signs up with a Bat Conservation International certified bat house kit to take home that you will build at the workshop with their full guidance and proper tools.

Bat houses, when built and placed correctly, offer safe and warm habitat for maternity colonies. Mother bats can give birth to their young there and the house provides shelter while mother bats leave the roost nightly to feed and while the pups remain in the roost until they are able to fly. Properties where there are already bat roosts are good candidates for bat houses. Providing a bat house can help get bats out of old homes, barns and other buildings while helping keep these beneficial insect-eating mammals around. The bat house you will build can provide a home for 50-100 bats depending on species.

Individuals or a group/family of up to 4 people per bat house
