Event Description:
Louisa Franklin, 2 Sessions, Thursday, July 12 & 19, 1:10 pm - 3:10 pm
For the past seven years all entering freshmen at YHC have read a common book over the summer, which engages them early on in academics. This year the Common Reading Program selection is The Serengeti Rules, a popular science text by Sean B. Carroll, Senior VP for Education at the Howard Hughes Medical Institutes. Dr. Carroll's book, published by Princeton University Press, links small scientific discoveries to massive common applications throughout the animal world. This informative and engaging work will, no doubt, stir lots of exciting conversations at YHC. Furthermore, Dr. Carroll, who has won the Stephen J. Gould Award for Popular Science Writing, will lecture at the College on Wednesday morning, October 24th.
ICL students in this class will read and discuss The Serengeti Rules, which may be purchased at the YHC Bookstore or from other vendors.
Louisa Franklin is a professor of English at YHC and Director of the Academic Success Center, which oversees the First Year Experience and Common Reading program. She has taught ICL classes on literature since the organization’s inception. Her teaching interests include ancient and medieval literature, as well as immigration and translated literature. She has led various college study abroad groups and travels the world with her husband as often as she can.
