TRAILS: HIKERS, BIKERS, PADDLERS, AND PILGRIMS

Mike Oliphant, 4 Sessions, Monday, July 9 - July 30, 3:15 pm - 5:15 pm

This series of classes will explore the allure of long distance trails. A trail can be defined as a path through rough country, but greater meaning can be attributed through shared and continued use. We will explore trail history, culture and traditions as reported in books, movies and personal experiences. We will also discuss planning, logistics, and equipment needed to organize successful trail experiences. We will consider the Appalachian Trail and other long distance hiking trails, rail-trails suited for long distance cycling, river trails for paddlers, and the pilgrim routes that lead to the cathedral in Northern Spain. The instructor has limited experience on hiking trails, and a small amount of experience on paddling trails. He has cycled on rail trails around the country has walked the pilgrim route in Spain 3 times.

Mike went to high school and college (Ga Tech and Ga State) in Atlanta, moved to Clay County, NC in 1975 and taught at Tri-County Community College for 3 years. In 1980 he went to work for the Campbell Folk School where he met his future wife, Martha Dysart. He lived in Hendersonville, NC with his family for 25 years and worked with a non-profit housing organization. He went back to college teaching in 2004 and retired from Brevard College in 2015.
